The Secret to Flare-Up Free Cooking on the ArcPit

How to prevent flare-ups when cooking over the campfire

There’s nothing worse than throwing your roast dinner on the rotisserie spit, or steaks on the ArcGrill and suddenly being hit with a wall of flames. Not only can flare-ups burn your food, but they also make outdoor cooking stressful when it should be simple and fun.

However, with the right gear and a few easy tips, you can keep those flare-ups under control and enjoy cooking over the fire the way it’s meant to be, relaxed and stress free!

What causes flare ups?

Flare-ups happen when fat and oil from your food drip directly into the fire or hot coals. The result is a sudden burst of flame that can scorch your food, leave a bitter taste, and even make cooking unsafe if it gets out of hand.

This is common with fatty meats like sausages, roasts, or marinated cuts — especially when cooked over an open flame.

ArcMate's tips to stop flare ups

  • Use the ArcPlate BBQ Plate
The ArcPlate’s flat stainless-steel surface keeps fats and juices from dripping directly into the flames, reducing the risk of flare-ups while still giving you that delicious sear.
  • Add a Foil Drip Tray
For roasts or fatty cuts on the ArcGrill or Rotisserie, place a simple foil tray underneath to catch the drips. Easy, effective, and disposable.
  • Manage Your Fire or Charcoal
Keep flames low and consistent. A solid bed of coals is easier to cook over than an active flame. If you’re using charcoal in the ArcPit, let it ash over before cooking.
  • Trim Excess Fat
A quick trim before cooking reduces the amount of grease that can cause flare-ups. You’ll still get juicy, flavour-packed meat without the fire hazard.

How and why stainless steel cooking plates make a difference?

Unlike coated or cast-iron surfaces, our 3mm food-grade stainless steel plates are built to handle high heat without warping, flaking, or absorbing oils. That means they’re easier to clean, don’t carry leftover grease into your next cook-up, and give you more control when things heat up.

Cooking over the campfire should be about great food and good times — not battling flare-ups. With the right accessories and a few simple steps, you’ll keep your food tasting incredible and your campfire safe.
