Q: What charcoal is best for a roast?

Hardwood Lump Charcoal – Our favourite. Made from natural Aussie hardwoods like ironbark or gidgee, lump charcoal burns hotter and gives off that authentic smoky flavour. It’s perfect for roasts because you can maintain steady heat for hours without heavy smoke or chemical smells. Charcoal Briquettes – Best for slow cooking. If you want a slower, more even burn (great for longer roasts like pork or lamb), briquettes are a solid pick. They hold heat well and reduce the need for constant topping up — just make sure you choose natural, low-ash briquettes without added chemicals.

It depends on your trip style! The Small (4–5kg) is perfect for overnighters and weekend campouts when you’re cooking a few meals over the fire. How much weight can the bags hold?

The small bag is designed to hold up to 5kgs and the large bag up to 8kg. The amount of charcoal you can fit in the bag will depend on the style of charcoal, eg heat beads will be smaller in size, therefore more can fit in the bag, whereas large charge lumps will fit less.
